picking out clothing

Have you ever wanted to get clothes for the woman you love, and asked yourself “What size is my girlfriend or wife?”  If you have, you’re not alone   If you’ve had a chance to check out this article, you’ll remember women generally like to pick out their own clothes.  There are exceptions, though, and they do like and appreciate thoughtful gifts.  So if you see a This is Us t-shirt you’re sure she’ll love (like the one in this post), and need to figure out what size to order her, we’re here to help!  Here are 4 ways to figure out what size clothes to get her.

Quick Tip:  Some people, women & men included, may be sensitive about the size of clothing they wear.  If you feel she may be sensitive in this area, it may be best and most thoughtful to check out some of our other gift guides.  😉

Stealthily Check Out Her Closet

This one is easy and probably the most reliable.  When she’s out of the house, take a sneak peek into her closet.  If you’re getting her a t-shirt, make sure to check a t-shirt that you’ve seen her wear recently.  Sometimes women prefer “roomier” t-shirt sizes that are a little bigger than what they wear in other clothing.  If you’re getting her a blouse or top, make sure you look at the same type of blouse/tops in her closet.

Phone a Friend

If she’s your girlfriend, looking in her closet might seem a little weird.  (Ok, yes, it’s definitely weird!)  In that case, just call or text one of her close friends and ask them.  Or her mom.  They will definitely be able to help steer you in the right direction.

Check out the Size Guides

If you already know her sizes, and you’re ordering something from a website — for example, some cute pajamas, you may find that the sizes are a bit confusing.  If you’re used to seeing xsmall, small, medium, large, etc., you might see them listed as size 0, size 2, size 4, etc.  When this happens, look for a sizing chart, which is usually right there on the same screen.  The size chart usually converts things for you – for example:  sizes 4-6 may be converted to a size Small.  But every website is different, so don’t assume if she wears a small on one website, you can always stick to that.  Be sure to check it out each time.  If you still can’t figure out her size, call their Customer Service number.  Tell them what sizes she normally wears, and they will be able to help.  One of our husbands did this and they put him right on the exact size – worked out great!

Last Resort – Ask Her Yourself

Lastly, if all else fails, ask her yourself.  Of course, this takes away the element of surprise, but not if do it once during the year.  Just ask her everything all at once, and with a twinkle in your eyes, tell her you want to have the info on hand “just in case you ever need it.” 😉  Ask for her blouse/top size, dress size, t-shirt size, pajama size, and whatever else you can think of.  Put it in the Notes section of your phone and you’ll always have it available!
